This photo taken from an airplane shows the new UPMC Northwest hospital under construction in Cranberry Township.

And it's probably the first time many people have seen the $65 million facility, since it's tucked away on a 144-acre track off Route 257 - too far away for passing motorists to see. "All I can see is the road that goes to nowhere," says one resident who often makes the Oil City-to-the-mall-area run.

But the state-of-the-art hospital is really there - and it's four stories high and 211,000 square feet. It will have 160 beds.

It is expected to open in November 2004, when it replaces the UPMC facilities in Franklin and Oil City.
